There has been a lot of questions lately about using heat mats so i thought i would type up an info sheet on the subject.....
Dragons sense light from above, they do this using a '3rd eye' possitioned on the top of their heads.
This allows them to find the sun and its heat so they can bask to digest their food and control body temperarure.
This is the reason the best form of heating for a dragon is a lighted basking bulb allowing them to sense where the heat source is.
Because they feel this heat from above and not below very well heat mats are not ideal in a dragon enclosure, they will often sit on a heat mat until they are burnt both inside and out before moving.
They have a slow nervous system so basically put by the time the nerves tell their brain something is burning them and they move the delay has already caused at least internal damage in most cases.
Some use them against the side of the enclosure to help with overall heat in the viv but this is usually better acomplished with a ceramic heater anyway so i personally feel heat mats should be left to the nocturnal species of lizards.
I hope these facts help you understand the dangers of using heat mats with dragons.
